I am a seven year old boy, and my name is Brady Jale. I was born August 12, 1937in Bedford, Virginia. I attend Bedford County Public School with me best friend John. My mother is Irish and French, while my father is Italian. My father also is a member of the U.S Army and very proud to be so.
Today, my father referred to what went on as a massacre, and my mother said a tragedy; the real name for today is D-day. My father just returned home today from participating in Operation Overload. That was the attacks code name, and it took place in Normandy, France (Danzer 574). On his mission he met many new people, because it wasn't only the American army who participated in this day, but also the British and the Canadians too (Danzer 574). The attack was under control by Dwight David Eisenhower. Their strategy worked very well; they tricked the German troops into thinking that they were going to be attacking Calais, which was actually 150 miles away from where they really attacked. They attacked Omaha Beach, and the battle was an absolute success. However, that success came with a high price; German retaliation and the over all battle was bloody, long and harsh. My mother told me this attack was the largest land-air-sea attack in army history (Williams, Barratt)! Five naval assault divisions were sent to the beaches of Normandy, and the invasion forces included 7,000 ships. My dad also said almost 133,000 troops from England, Canada and the United States landed on D-day. Even though my dad is home now, there are still people fighting; 850,000 men, 148,000 vehicles, and 570,000 tons of supplies are what have landed on the Normandy shores (World War II). I thought that was so cool, because there is so much stuff. This battle freed France from Germany’s rule, and it also is the turning point in the war. Germany suffered greatly from this attack, while even thought the United States did have 10,300 deaths, overall we only suffered a few minor set backs. I am just happy that my father is finally home and safe. Even though my mother thinks he will be sent back to Normandy, she does not think it will be for long because we are now doing very well in the war.
